Big Data and the Cyberwar

On Tuesday 5 July 2011, the International Cyber Security Protection Alliance was launched in London.

This not–for-profit organisation aims to bring together international businesses, governments, law enforcement agencies and cyber security specialists. Firms like McAfee and Trend Micro are already members, and Europol has recently signed a partnership agreement.

This initiative was celebrated by Prime Minister David Cameron as a ‘truly global response’ to cyber security threats posed by criminal organisations, terrorists and ‘hacktivists’ to the vast pools of data gathered by governments and businesses, also known as ‘Big Data’. Read more

Knots to binary code

People invented writing because, pragmatically, they needed to count and keep track of things.

Some of the earliest form of data records, the Sumerian clay tablets (c. 5000 BC) were inventories of agricultural and manufactured goods. The quipus or ‘talking knots’ which were used around 1400 BC in the Inca Empire consisted of coloured threads and a system of knots encoding, recording and conveying detailed numerical and non-numerical data on crops and cattle.

Today, data in binary code is collected from companies and individuals worldwide. Read more
